Back in the day you could just pay a small fee, or even just e-mail a webmaster, and have your new site submitted into all of the major directories, lists, and search engines. Lycos would list your site (along with 11 million others) for free, but you would’ve had to wait up to 3 weeks to get indexed. To save time, you could submit to Alta Vista or a Usenet group.
